Automated driving with connected trucks

ServiceXpert operates in the area of "safe vehicle-to-vehicle communication"

Over the past ten years, intensive research has been conducted into automated driving in connected trucks, from automated construction site vehicles to autonomous trucks. Considerable progress has been made in the semi-autonomous driving of trucks, which is now successfully practised by the manufacturer's own brands on designated routes.

To take the next step in this development, an integral multi-brand approach is being pursued as part of the European project ENSEMBLE, on which the six largest commercial vehicle manufacturers are working. The advantages of this truck driving connectivity (platooning) are the optimization of traffic capacity and throughput for road freight transport, additional security through connectivity of trucks and of course the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

In order to bring the multi-brand truck driving network safely onto the road, the ENSEMBLE project is pushing forward the standardization of various aspects. The focus is on the manoeuvre for forming and resolving platoons, the lateral and longitudinal control as well as communication protocols and message sets (CAM, PCM, PMM). In addition, standardized security mechanisms must be developed and implemented.

The ServiceXpert Gesellschaft für Service-Informationssysteme mbH has already actively participated in previous development projects of this kind and supported large OEMs. In doing so, the engineers were able to gain extensive experience and independently contribute processes and tools for the success of the first steps. In a customer project, ServiceXpert designed and implemented a safety controller in MATLAB / Simulink which initiates the different states of a platoon. Furthermore, a model to control the longitudinal guidance of the truck platoon was implemented. To guarantee ISO26262 requirements, the ServiceXpert engineers developed i. a. the control unit software using CODESYS and integrated the control unit in the vehicle. The control unit checks components of the truck combination regarding conformity and has now been released for road use.

For more than two years, ServiceXpert has been taking on significant tasks in vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V) on behalf of customers, e. g. the further development, integration and protection of an onboard communication unit (OCU). The number of possible communication partners of this OCU has been increased in order to identify platoon partners and their position and to ensure the continuous update of the communication protocol according to customer specifications. In addition, a customer-specific encryption concept was implemented to achieve the security requirements of V2V communication.

The ServiceXpert development team always works with passion and technical know-how on future-oriented trends like V2V communication and supports its customers with innovative, solution-oriented ideas and concepts.

ServiceXpert, an ESG-Group company, employs over 85 staff in Hamburg and Munich. ServiceXpert is a Europe-wide operating system and software house with a focused service portfolio for Lifecycle management of EE information for leading manufacturers of commercial vehicle and their supplier industry.
